Educational Grants

OYFF offers educational grants to birth/first mothers who lived in California at the time of placement or placed with a family in California.  Educational grants can be applied to traditional school or college programs as well as non-traditional educational or vocational programs.  Some things OYFF educational grants have funded include; tuition, textbooks, GED testing materials and test fees, driving school, professional certifications, nursing school uniforms and transportation costs.  OYFF recognizes that there are hidden school costs that can prevent women from completing their educations. OYFF grants are designed to cover not only the typical costs, but to also fill in gaps left uncovered by financial aid.

OYFF educational grants are issued for one term or one vocational goal.  If a woman completes the term or meets their original goal, she is eligible to apply for another OYFF educational grant.  Following are some guidelines:

  • Tuition grants are paid directly to the school.
  • The school must be an accredited or otherwise recognized institution.
  • Grants cannot be applied to debt.
  • Applicants who already hold a master’s degree are not eligible to apply.
  • Grants may be used for non-traditional school needs including but not limited to; uniforms, supplies (computer, textbooks, etc) , application or testing fees, or transportation costs.

The following items are NOT covered by OYFF Academic Grants:

  • Loans
  • Rent
  • Food
  • Bills
  • Other living expenses
